We did it! No more arms fairs in Glasgow

As a result of the demonstrations held against the Glasgow Arms Fair (the Undersea Defence Technology conference held at the SEC at the end of June) Glasgow City Council have committed to a new human rights based ethical policy to ensure events such as this are not hosted in Glasgow again.

Huge congratulations and thanks to everyone who supported the demonstrations. We’ll continue to keep the pressure on the council to ensure they abide by their commitments.

About the Glasgow Arms Fair #UDT2018

On 26-28 June 2018 Glasgow hosted the Undersea Defence Technology Conference (UDT) at the SEC.

Glasgow City Council actively bid to bring this arms fair to Scotland, promising the attending multinational corporations and their executives a wide range of free services paid for with public funds.

Attendees included the Israeli company DSIT Solutions – whose technology enforces the blockade of Gaza and whose board is staffed by members of the Israeli military – and corporations such as Lockheed Martin, Leonardo, Raytheon and Norhrop Grumman that supply arms to the Israeli state.

The arms fair was led by BAE and Babcock, chief architects of the next-generation of Trident nuclear-armed submarines. It included talks and a discussion that include Trident and Dreadnaught. The UDT Committee includes a Commodore from the UK Submarine Delivery Agency.

A coalition of Scottish organisations led the successful opposition to the UDT under the banner Sink The Glasgow Arms Fair. Coalition members included Campaign Against Arms Trade, Scottish Campaign for Nuclear Disarmament, Trident Ploughshares, SNP Campaign for Nuclear Disarmament, Scottish Peace Network, Scottish Palestine Solidarity Campaign, Food Not Bombs, Scotland Against Militarism, Scottish Solidarity with Kurdistan, Catholic Workers, Scottish Socialist Party and Dovetales Scotland
